शिरोधारा — मस्तिष्क एवं मन की गहन चिकित्सा
Shirodhara is one of Ayurveda's most profoundly calming and transformative therapies. The name comes from Sanskrit: Shiro (head) + Dhara (stream/flow). A continuous, unbroken stream of warm medicated liquid is poured gently over the forehead — specifically targeting the Ajna chakra (third eye) and Sthapani marma point.
The therapy creates a deeply meditative state, quieting the mental chatter, resetting the nervous system, and inducing what practitioners describe as a "conscious sleep" — a state of deep relaxation while remaining aware. It is the most powerful non-invasive therapy for stress, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, and neurological disorders in the entire Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia.
Modern research confirms Shirodhara significantly reduces cortisol levels, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, increases serotonin and dopamine, and induces alpha brain wave patterns associated with deep meditation and healing.
Different liquids prescribed for different conditions
Warm medicated oil (Brahmi, Ksheerabala, or Dhanwantharam) poured over forehead. The most common and versatile form — ideal for Vata disorders, anxiety, insomnia, neurological conditions, and general stress relief.
Medicated milk (often with Shatavari, Brahmi, or sandalwood) used for Pitta disorders — burning sensations, hot flushes, scalp psoriasis, inflammatory headaches, and hormonal imbalances in women.
Medicated buttermilk with Amalaki and cooling herbs. Specially indicated for scalp psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, hair fall, greying, and Pitta-type headaches. Excellent for summer use.
Herbal decoctions used for specific conditions — Dashmoola decoction for Vata disorders, Triphala decoction for metabolic conditions. Less common but highly targeted for specific disease treatment.
Medicated warm water with herbs or flower essences. Used for mild Pitta conditions, sunstroke, heat exhaustion, and as an accessible introductory Dhara for sensitive patients and children.
Blend of warm milk and sesame oil — a combined Snigdha (unctuous) and Sheeta (cooling) therapy. Prescribed for complex conditions involving both Vata and Pitta simultaneously, providing balanced benefits.

The science and mechanism of this profound therapy
The stream lands precisely on Sthapani Marma — the master marma point between the eyebrows governing brain function and consciousness. This sustained stimulation triggers deep neurological relaxation, balances cerebral hemispheres, and opens channels of higher awareness and healing.
EEG studies confirm that Shirodhara induces alpha wave brain states (8–12 Hz) associated with deep relaxation, creativity, and healing. This state reduces anxiety hormones (cortisol, adrenaline), activates the body's repair mechanisms, and creates profound mental peace.
The steady rhythmic flow creates continuous sensory input to the hypothalamus via the trigeminal nerve pathway. This resets hypothalamic function — regulating sleep cycles, stress hormones, body temperature, appetite, and autonomic nervous system balance simultaneously.
Medicated oils penetrate the scalp skin, reach cerebral blood vessels, and deliver active herbal compounds (Brahmi, Shankhapushpi, Ashwagandha) directly to nervous tissue. This transdermal drug delivery bypasses digestive processing for more direct neurological action.
The head (Shiras) is the seat of Prana Vata and the master control centre. When Vata becomes aggravated in the head, it causes anxiety, insomnia, and neurological disorders. Shirodhara's warm, unctuous stream directly pacifies this aggravated Prana Vata at its primary location.
Post-Shirodhara blood work shows increased serotonin and dopamine with reduced norepinephrine. This neurochemical shift explains the therapy's profound anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, and sleep-promoting effects — making it a legitimate natural alternative for these conditions.
A carefully orchestrated journey to deep healing
A detailed consultation focusing on mental and neurological health. Our Vaidya assesses current stress levels, sleep patterns, mental health history, neurological symptoms, Prakriti analysis, and Nadi Pariksha (pulse diagnosis). For psychiatric conditions, a thorough Manas Prakriti (mental constitution) assessment determines the dominant mental doshas (Satva, Rajas, Tamas). This guides selection of the exact Dhara liquid, temperature, flow rate, duration, and complementary therapies to be combined for your specific condition.
Every Shirodhara session is preceded by a 20–30 minute preparatory oil massage — particularly of the head, neck, and shoulders. This Poorvakarma (preparatory step) opens the srotas (channels), relaxes muscles, prepares the nervous system to receive Dhara's deeper effects, and ensures the scalp skin is properly oleated for maximum absorption. Without proper preparation, the Shirodhara's impact is significantly reduced. The massage itself uses specific strokes designed to induce pre-relaxation.
The patient lies supine on the Droni (Shirodhara table) with eyes covered by soft cotton pads. The Dhara vessel — a copper pot with a precisely sized hole — is suspended 8–10 cm above the forehead. Warm medicated liquid (temperature 37–42°C, carefully verified) begins flowing in a pendulum-like oscillating stream across the entire forehead from one temple to another. The continuous rhythmic flow lasts 30–45 minutes. The therapist maintains constant vigilance on temperature, flow rate, and the patient's state. Gentle silence and soft music create the optimal healing environment.
After the flow stops, the therapist performs a gentle 10-minute scalp massage to aid absorption of the residual oil into the scalp. This also helps the patient transition slowly from the deep meditative state back to normal awareness — a crucial step to prevent any disorientation. The patient remains lying down for an additional 10–15 minutes in complete rest before being guided to sit up slowly. Rushing this transition can cause dizziness. Our therapists are trained to support this gentle reorientation process with care and mindfulness.
The hair and scalp are washed with warm water and herbal powders (Shikakai, Reetha, Triphala) after a 15-minute wait to allow further absorption. The patient is then moved to a quiet rest area and observed for 30 minutes. Warm herbal tea (usually Brahmi or Ashwagandha tea) is provided. Our Vaidya checks the patient's mental state, blood pressure, and overall response. Any post-therapy experiences are noted to refine subsequent sessions. The entire visit typically spans 2.5–3 hours from consultation to discharge.
For insomnia and mild stress, a 7-day daily course shows dramatic improvement. For chronic anxiety, migraines, or neurological conditions, a 14–21 day course is recommended. Patients with PTSD, depression, or chronic neurological disorders benefit from 28-day courses with monthly maintenance sessions. Combined with Nasya therapy, internal medicines (Brahmi Rasayana, Saraswatarishta), yoga, and pranayama for comprehensive results. Follow-up consultations at 2, 6, and 12 weeks track progress and adjust the protocol. Most patients report life-changing improvements in sleep, stress, and overall mental wellbeing.
Precisely selected for each condition and constitution
The quintessential Shirodhara oil. Brahmi in sesame base deeply nourishes brain and nervous tissue. Prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, and cognitive issues.
Milk-processed Bala oil — the most nourishing choice for sensitive, Vata-aggravated patients and advanced neurological conditions.
Warm cow's milk processed with Shatavari, Ashwagandha, and sandalwood. Cooling, Pitta-pacifying Dhara for hot-constitution patients.
Medicated sour buttermilk with Amalaki, Haritaki, and cooling herbs. Specifically curative for scalp skin conditions and hair problems.
